Regular quality sleep at night is essential to good health. There are a number of factors that influence how soundly one sleeps - temperature, ambiance, noise, comfort and well-being. If you are fit and healthy you are more likely to sleep well.

But for people with allergies, asthma, hay fever and sinusitis the greatest barrier to a good night’s sleep can be the horrible little dust mites, living and breeding inside their pillow. The house dust mite and its faeces is a major allergen for asthma and sinus inflammation.

Do dust mites live inside all pillows?

If you had to come up with the perfect environment to breed dust mites and bacteria, besides a Petri dish with agar (a gelatinous food), a pillow is pretty much as good as you can get. The good news is that some pillows (memory foam and latex) are hypoallergenic. Allergens like dust mites, bacteria, microbes and mould cannot live, grow or breed inside them.

The vast majority of pillows in the market (polyester fibre fill) can be treated with anti-microbial chemicals, but usually are not, due to growing consumer resistance for obvious reasons – if the treatment kills dust mites and bed bugs, it can’t be exactly healthy for humans. In spite of the fact that these chemicals are the most highly regulated of anything - bar medication and foodstuffs.

A hypoallergenic pillow is either made from materials such as memory foam or latex that do not provide an environment in which allergens such as dust mites can exist – or are chemically treated with antibacterial and antimicrobial chemicals that minimise the ability of allergens to thrive.

If your pillow is hypoallergenic (raw material is memory foam or latex), use of a pillow protector and regular washing of the pillow case is all that is required. A washable pillow protector is a good extra barrier to all pillows, making the pillow less likely to trigger allergies. Fibre fill pillows should be chemically treated with antimicrobials such as Ultra Fresh and washed regularly – but remember the protection wears off with washing.

Natural latex is naturally hypoallergenic and as good as you can get in a pillow for helping people with asthma, allergies, hay fever and sinus problems. They are naturally antimicrobial, hypoallergenic, house dust mite resistant – and bed bugs don’t eat rubber. Synthetic latex (a mixture of styrene and butadiene) is also hypoallergenic, but is made from oil derivatives and chemicals, as is memory foam.

While natural latex pillows are good for asthma and allergies because they are hypoallergenic, although extremely rare, people can be allergic to latex itself. This usually manifests itself in a rash when the skin comes is direct contact with, say, latex gloves or balloons. In extreme cases it can be quite severe, even fatal. In all our research, we are yet to identify a single case of a latex pillow causing any such problem.

Inflamed sinuses need to be kept open as much as possible and the best way to help with this at night is to sleep with the head and upper body slightly elevated. A wedge pillow is best for achieving this - and allowing the nasal passages to drain, while relieving pressure. Propping up on two pillows or a pillow with extra height can also help, so long as the pillows are hypoallergenic.
